Once upon a time a horrible dragon terrified the villagers of an ancient town. The elder said its breath was a rotten cloud that poisoned the air and flames burnt from its jaws. Each day, as black death lottery, there was a raffle between the inhabitants in order to decide who would be the dragon’s meal that day.
This kept the dragon calm until one fateful day: the young and beautiful princess had been selected. All the villagers loved her and a lot of voices rose to offer themselves instead of the maid. “NO” was the answer of a tearful king, as he knew that there was nothing he could do to preserve his daughter’s life. “No one of us is more than the others, neither my beloved girl”.
Slowly advanced the princess among the fields, scared and nimbly, while the people stared from the town’s walls. The giant monster appeared suddenly as cold freezed the flowers that April, 23rd. There was no fate for the girl…
Until the knight appeared surrounded by a brilliant white light. His armour was made of gold and a long wooden spear armed his hands. The dragon roared as a horse galloped towards, and screamed loudly when the spear found its skin.
Warm blood poured from its wound, and suddenly it became the most beautiful rose bush ever seen. The knight, Saint George, took one of the red flowers and offered it to the safe princess as an emblem of his love. Then disappeared as quickly as he appeared, but nothing remained the same in the town.
That’s the reason why, each April 23rd, catalan men bring a red rose to their beloved women. And they shall receive a book in honour of Cervantes and Shakespeare.
A good story to remember…
